Common Dental Problems and How to Prevent Them

Everyone’s smile is unique, but dentists see common dental problems over and over again. Thankfully, there are ways to prevent these issues and maintain excellent oral health!

Tooth Sensitivity

You have sensitive nerves inside your teeth, but they’re protected by a hard layer called enamel. When your enamel thins, you may feel increased sensitivity. Starches, sugars, and acids are the main triggers, but you can also wear down your teeth by brushing too hard. To prevent sensitivity, practice good oral hygiene, limit acidic and sugary foods and beverages, and visit the dentist for regular cleanings!

Gum Disease

Your mouth is full of bacteria, and while some are harmless, others can inflame and infect your gums. Poor oral hygiene is the most common cause of gum disease, so you can prevent it with regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings. The first stage of gum disease – gingivitis – can be reversed, but if it progresses to periodontitis, you can only manage the disease, not cure it.

Cavities

The same bacteria that cause gum disease also cause tooth decay. Bacteria produce acid, which gnaws tiny holes called cavities in your enamel. Small cavities may not hurt at first, but as they grow, you can experience pain, infections, and tooth loss. Good oral hygiene, limiting sugar exposure frequency, a healthy diet, and regular checkups at the dentist are the best ways to prevent cavities.

Tooth Discoloration

Tooth color has a genetic component, but diet, age, and other lifestyle factors affect your tooth color, too. Your teeth naturally want to get yellow, but you can keep your teeth whiter and brighter by brushing and flossing well, limiting dark-colored foods and beverages, and not smoking or chewing tobacco. You can also avoid deep staining by drinking lots of water. We also offer professional teeth whitening as an option to brighten your smile.
