Can My Sinuses Cause a Toothache?

There are various reasons why you might be suffering from dental pain. There’s one reason in particular that may surprise you. While pain in your mouth could be a toothache due to a true dental issue, there’s also a chance that the source of the pain is sinus pressure.

Sinus pressure comes as a result of inflammation of the sinuses and it’s usually not the only symptom you’ll have. Other things to look for include congestion and headache, especially around and behind the eyes.

Why Are My Sinuses Causing a Toothache?

So why does this happen? Your top back teeth are located right next to your maxillary sinus. Because of their proximity, you can feel pressure on the nerves of your teeth when the sinus is swollen and inflamed. This can cause you to feel tooth pain. If your tooth pain is indeed caused by your sinus, you don’t have to worry about any impact on the health of your tooth. However, you probably have a sinus infection or something similar that requires treatment from your primary care provider.

What Else Causes a Toothache?

If you’re experiencing pain but you’ve ruled out any issues related to your sinuses, you could be dealing with a dental issue. Common causes of a toothache include decay, trauma or other damage, abscess, and TMJ disorder.
