Benefits of Daily Flossing

Flossing every day can have a hugely positive impact on your oral health! For example, it can help reduce your risk of the following issues:

  1. Tooth Decay
  2. Cavities can develop on the surfaces in-between teeth if flossing is not done frequently enough. These areas are difficult to reach with brushing alone and can easily trap bacteria and food particles. A combination of daily brushing and flossing ensures that the back, front, top, and sides of each tooth stays clean of debris.

  3. Gum Disease
  4. If plaque stays on the teeth for an extended period of time, it can calcify into a hard substance called tartar. Plaque and tartar that collect under the gumline will irritate the gums and cause them to pull away from the teeth. Gum recession causes the formation of pockets that collect bacteria, increasing your risk of gum infection and tooth sensitivity.

The symptoms of gum disease include gums that are dark red, tender and puffy, and prone to bleeding. The earliest stage of gum disease is gingivitis, or gum inflammation, which is the only reversible stage of gum disease. If patients can improve their gum health at this stage, they can prevent loss of their gum tissue, teeth and jawbone.

  5. Bad Breath
  6. Bad breath is usually caused by old food particles and bad bacteria that build up in the mouth. This occurs when proper oral hygiene is not practiced. Flossing is a critical step in your at-home oral care routine that will help promote fresh breath!

  7. Other Health Issues
  8. Oral health is very closely related to overall health. Untreated dental issues can contribute to issues in other parts of your body, such as your heart. For example, infections in your teeth and gums can spread through the bloodstream if not treated promptly, leading to serious consequences.
