How to Care for Mouthguards and Athletic Protectors

Whether it’s football, basketball, or weekend sparring at the gym, your athletic mouthguard is doing some heavy lifting. It shields your teeth, absorbs impact, and protects against serious injuries. But to keep doing its job, it needs some care too.

Mouthguards can collect bacteria, wear down, or lose their shape over time—especially if they’re tossed in a gym bag without a second thought. With a few simple habits, you can make sure your athletic gear stays fresh, functional, and ready for the next round.

Rinse Right After You Use It

Start with the basics. After each use, rinse your mouthguard with cool water. This removes saliva, food particles, and surface bacteria. Avoid hot water—it can warp the material and affect the fit.

If your schedule allows, a quick rinse with an antimicrobial solution once or twice a week can keep things cleaner longer.

Brush It Gently

Every few days, give your mouthguard a gentle brushing. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild soap. Scrub both inside and out, then rinse thoroughly.

Avoid harsh cleaners, alcohol-based rinses, or anything abrasive. Those can break down the material or leave an aftertaste that makes wearing it unpleasant.

Let It Breathe Between Uses

After cleaning, store your athletic mouthguard in a ventilated case. Airflow helps it dry and reduces bacterial growth. A sealed container traps moisture, which can lead to a not-so-fresh smell—or worse, mold.

Make sure the case itself stays clean, too. Wash it out with soap and water regularly.

Know When to Replace It

Even with perfect care, mouthguards don’t last forever. If it’s cracked, has sharp edges, or feels loose, it’s time to replace it. Kids and teens may need new ones more often due to growth and dental changes.
