The Importance of Oral Hygiene

Proper dental hygiene can help your teeth and gums stay healthy and strong. By brushing, flossing, and attending regular dental visits, you are more likely to avoid developing dental issues such as cavities and gum disease.

Tips for Maintaining Good Dental Health

At Abidin & Cao, DDS, we want our patients to have all of the tools and information necessary to help them achieve a healthy smile. We’ve created a list of some of the most important tips to keeping your teeth and gums in great shape.

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes — Properly brushing your teeth can leave you with fresher breath, fewer cavities, and fewer dental issues in the future.
  • Floss at least once a day — Plaque and food debris can hide between your teeth. Flossing can help prevent gum recession and tooth decay.
  • Use an electric toothbrush — Electric toothbrushes are more efficient at removing plaque compared to traditional brushes. Instead of manually making circles on your teeth with your brush, electric toothbrushes provide this cleaning action for you.
  • Maintain a healthy diet — Sugary food creates harmful acids in our mouth that eat away at tooth enamel and cause cavities. Eating foods that are full of vitamins and nutrients, instead of snacks full of sugar, can help you keep your enamel strong.
  • Use products containing fluoride — Fluoride is a naturally occurring element that makes teeth more resistant to bacteria and plaque buildup. We encourage you to incorporate toothpastes and mouthwashes that contain fluoride into your daily routine.
  • Visit the dentist twice a year — While brushing and flossing can keep your teeth healthy, routine dental visits give us a chance to make sure your teeth are in tip-top shape. During your checkup we’ll thoroughly clean your teeth and perform an examination.

Preventive Care

By visiting our office every six months, we’re able to detect and treat any dental issues while they’re still small. We also perform a professional teeth cleaning to remove any tartar or plaque that your toothbrush and floss have missed. When it comes to your oral health, it’s better to be proactive because it can save you from having serious dental problems down the road. Great oral hygiene and routine preventive care can help you keep your teeth, and you, healthy for a lifetime.
