Even if you brush and floss everyday, you may not always be able to reach every spot or crevice in your mouth. Because of this, it's possible to form small cavities even if you practice good dental habits—and that's where tooth sealants come in. Sealants are a great, long-lasting preventive treatment for adults and children that can last up to eight years!
What Are Dental Sealants?
Sealants are a common preventive treatment made with a plastic resin material that seals and protects the surfaces of teeth from cavities and decay. They fill in the natural grooves on teeth where bacteria and leftover food debris often hide. Sealants are usually applied to the teeth that are hard to reach in the back of the mouth.
The Sealant Process
Applying dental sealants is a quick process that usually happens at the end of your regular dental cleaning and checkup. First, we dry off your teeth and apply an acid solution to the surface of your teeth to give them texture (the texture gives the sealants a better grip on your teeth). Then, we'll rinse off the solution and brush the sealant onto the top part (chewing surfaces) of your teeth. If necessary, we will use a curing light to help the sealant properly bond and harden.
